I hope this is obvious, but before I describe some tools useful to me, some things must be mentioned.
First off, this is not a hobby for children (Use your judgement here. Certainly most adolescents can deal with these precautions. But define children! See below.). There are pointy things involved (knives, files, even toothpicks). Small children also have the propensity to swallow things. Or put them in various orifices (nose, ears, or your deepest fears). Yes, your work of art. If you ask why this happened, answer #1 is “I don’t know.”

Try to have a safe place to put those knives along with covering them. They always seem to roll off a surface towards you.
Third, when working with certain chemicals (glues, solvents, etc.), good ventilation is essential.
